UW-Richland Approved to Offer Innovative Bachelor’s Degree

Degree completion program is designed for adults

The University of Wisconsin Colleges, the parent organization for UW-Richland, has received approval from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) to offer a new Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) degree completion program. UW-Richland will be one of six campuses to start enrolling students for the BAAS in the fall, 2013, semester.

UW Colleges also received continuing accreditation from the HLC to offer the Associate of Arts and Science degree. The HLC is an independent organization which accredits degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions in the North Central region. The accreditation process assures students that the institution meets generally accepted standards. The HLC assesses all member colleges and universities on a regular basis. HLC evaluators visited UW-Richland in November, 2012, and met with faculty, staff, students, administrators and community stakeholders.

CEO/Dean of UW-Richland Dr. Patrick Hagen, explained that the BAAS degree completion program is primarily designed to help adults who have an Associate of Arts and Science degree and who want to obtain a bachelor’s degree without leaving their communities. The degree will be offered in partnership with UW-Platteville.

The BAAS degree completion program includes such innovations as credit for prior learning including knowledge gained at a job or in the military, internships, and service learning. Students will also complete a senior capstone seminar that has them apply their experiences, knowledge and skills to a particular issue or need in the community.

“The BAAS degree is very timely and relevant to today’s adult students,” said Hagen.  “It meets the needs of local businesses and organizations for employees who are skilled in teamwork and communications, and it meets Wisconsin’s need for a more educated workforce.”

UW-Richland is a campus of the University of Wisconsin Colleges, an institution of the University of Wisconsin System comprised of 13 campuses and UW Colleges Online that offers an Associate of Arts and Science degree and a single Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree, and prepares students of all ages and backgrounds for baccalaureate and professional programs.
