University of Wisconsin-Richland Graduation and Awards Night 2014 is scheduled for Friday, May 9.  Ceremonies, to be held in the Coppertop Theatre on campus, begin at 7pm.

Wisconsin Senator Dale Schultz will give the graduation address. In a speech entitled “Don’t Be Afraid to Choose the Rapids,” Schultz will discuss the importance of the liberal arts for leaders of Southwest Wisconsin, of following your passions and acting on what you believe. A resident of Richland Center, he was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly in 1982 and the State Senate in 1991. In 1975 he graduated from UW-Madison, where he played basketball and was a member of the UW national champion rowing team. He and his wife Rachel have two daughters, one a recent UW graduate and the other a UW student.

During his tenure in the legislature, Dale has earned a reputation as a consensus builder who can reach across party lines to get results. He’s been recognized for his work on agriculture and insurance issues. He and his wife own and manage their family’s farm, which became a Wisconsin Century Farm in 1998. He is a member of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau, the Masons, and the Lions. In addition to his official legislative duties, Senator Schultz is a member of the Wisconsin Historical Society Board of Curators. He’s active with the National Conference of State Legislators, and the National Conference of Insurance Legislators .

About 90 associate degree candidates and recipients will be recognized, including students who earned their associate of arts and science degree in December of 2013 and those expecting to earn their degree after completing spring or summer 2014 studies.

Awards recognizing students for academic achievement, excellence, and campus service will be presented, as will scholarships for students who have completed their UW-Richland studies and are preparing to transfer to complete their bachelor’s degrees.

The UW-Richland Alumni Association and Foundation will host a reception in the Wallace Student Center following the ceremonies.

Family and friends of those to be recognized are welcome. UW-Richland is located at 1200 Highway 14 West in Richland Center. For more information about Graduation and Awards Night, call UW-Richland at (608) 647-6186.
