Dr. Brandon Fetterly, University of Wisconsin-Richland assistant professor of chemistry, presented a paper and was co-author of two papers presented by others recently at the 241st annual meeting of the American Chemical Society. Held in Anaheim, California, the conference brought together chemists and chemistry educators from across the US and beyond for the purpose of sharing research, innovations and information.
Fetterly presented a paper entitled “Stimulating student interest in using guided-inquiry in the laboratory to learn chemistry” that was co-authored with two colleagues. The research they shared looked techniques used by faculty to enhance student learning in the chemistry lab.
Fetterly was a co-author of two other papers presented at the conference by his research collaborators. Titles of those papers are “Student-centered learning in the laboratory: The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach and its impact on students” and “Student-centered learning in the laboratory: The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach and its impact on teachers.” Both papers looked at the effectiveness of an approach to teaching called Student-led Instructor Facilitated Guided Inquiry Laboratories (SLIFGIL).
He explains the focus on teaching in his research. “We’re primarily a teaching institution,” Fetterly said. “It was exciting to be able to share how my students have developed through what I do in the classroom. I learn just as much from them as they do from me.”
