Research

Dr. Scott Walter has conducted research on the

ecology of Ruffed Grouse(Bonasa umbellus) in

southwest Wisconsin since 2003. The focus of

this research is to describe the population

dynamics of this bird in a maturing forest

landscape, and to determine the factors

 responsible for a long-term decline:

Estimates of survival, natality, and habitat use

are being derived from monitoring of

radio-marked grouse. To date, 56 grouse have

been captured and equipped with radio

 transmitters, and >3700 locations recorded.

 Eleven UW-Richland students have served

as paid technicians on this research

project since it’s implementation, and have

formed the foundation of data collection in

the field.
