Dean's bio

Dr. Deborah B. Cureton, interim Campus Executive Officer and Dean at the University of Wisconsin -Richland, previously served as CEO/Dean from 2001-July 2008. After a one-year retirement, she returned to head the campus during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Prior to leading UW-Richland, Dr. Cureton served as Associate Campus Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Affairs at the University of South Carolina Lancaster. During her 20 years at the Lancaster campus, a regional campus of the University of South Carolina, she also served as director of academic support services and earned tenure as a full professor, teaching education, developmental studies, and freshman seminar courses.

She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her master's degree is in reading education and her bachelor's in French education, both earned from the University of South Carolina. Her career in education began in the early 1970s when she served as a teacher to third and fourth grade students in Lancaster County.

Dean Cureton has served on many committees and boards that focus on public policy, educational outreach, program development and administration related to education. She feels that regional, 2-year universities have a unique and important niche in higher education: to provide the highest quality liberal arts education by bringing the resources of the greater university to the local communities served, and, at the same time, to increase the avenues by which the local citizenry, particularly underserved populations, can access a university education. Her memberships include the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education, Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Leadership, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She is a life member of Girl Scouts USA.

The primary focus of her work has been building programs that foster her passion---student success.
