An affordable clinic for basketball coaches featuring two respected speakers is scheduled for 5:15-8:45pm Wednesday, October 16, in the gymnasium on the University of Wisconsin-Richland campus. Registration is now underway.
Steve Klaas, former Adams-Friendship boys coach, will address the topic of The 1-3-1 Zone Defense--basic shifts, concepts, breakdown and drills. “He’s considered one of the leading experts on teaching and playing the 1-3-1 zone defense,” said Tracy Krueger, UW-Richland athletic director and clinic organizer. “Any coach who wants to learn the 1-3-1 should attend this clinic.”
Pat Miller, coach of the UW-Whitewater men’s basketball team, will speak about “UW-Whitewater Offensive Sets & Shooting.” Of Miller, Krueger said, “He’s done what few do—play on a national championship team and coach a team to the national title—both at UW-Whitewater. He’s an outstanding educator, speaker and coach. Everyone in attendance will gain some offensive tips from Coach Miller.”
Those who register by Friday, October 11 get a clinic T-shirt and basketball video. Advance registration is $35 for the first coach from a school; $65 for two coaches from the same school; or $80 for three coaches from the same school. Those who register at the door on the day of the clinic will pay $45 for the first coach from a school and $35 for each additional coach. A pizza dinner is included in the fee.
“This is one of the most economical clinics in the state,” Krueger said. “We’re able to keep costs down because of six great sponsors—Center Court, The Shoe Box, Pepsi of La Crosse, The Press Box, Sysko’s Sports-Books-Videos, and Badger Sporting Goods. There will be something of value for every coach at every level of coaching.”
